10 Wedding Hair & Makeup Inspo Images ... from Horror Movies
Finding hair and makeup inspiration for your wedding from horror movies sounds like a very odd source. Recently though, while watching a scary movie this dawned on me that it was possible and maybe it’s an untapped resource. Do I think it’s going to overtake the typical way of finding images? No. Is it a new alt outlet that may catch your gaze this spooky season? Absolutely. Here’s my top 10 favorites:
Ready or Not - This is the movie that started it all! While watching all I could think was how much I loved Grace’s updo. The braids, the bun, the tendrils- chef’s kiss. And yes it got ragged and messy as the movie went on but honestly it held even through all the horrors. If you’re looking for a boho, romantic low bun this could be your inspo.
Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen - Rachel’s makeup is on point. It’s a little sultry and moody but still within the neutral range. It’s not too dark or smokey but just enough to feel a little edgy and still allow her natural beauty to shine through. If you’re struggling with that balance this is a good reference.
Phantom of the Opera (2004)- If you want an elaborate, not-subdued hair that harkens to regency, Christine’s hair is an elaborate updo that could be the right inspiration. Some won’t say it’s horror but scary mystery man lurking and capturing is still scary even if there is music.
Underworld- Selene’s makeup is flawless. Natural makeup overall with a teeny-bit of neutral details around the eyes to make the blue pop, making her look gorgeous while also being a total bad ass. And honestly you’ve probably not even thought about her makeup. It’s ok, do a quick google and you’ll see how stunning it is.
Addams Family- Morticia Addams is the queen of sophisticated goth-vibes. Her winged eyeliner lifts and elongates her eye shape, creating a fox-like, mysterious look. The amount of smokey-ness varies depending upon which version of Morticia you’re looking at but this could be nice for you because we can see the different ways shadow can play with the liner all while existing in the same over aesthetic vibe.
The Haunting of Hill House- Nell throughout the series, (predominantly before things get too wild) has soft waves that look believably natural or slightly amped up. Sometimes she couples them with a half up style. Both versions would be a great “simple” not overdone hair reference.
The Fall of the House of Usher- Camille has incredible smokey eye makeup in this mini series throughout, even when things get intense. The dark shadows and super smooth hair create the essence of someone powerful, edgy, and dangerously sexy. Between the contrast of the smokey shadows, her eye color, a more neutral lip, and her very light hair there is a beautiful chiaroscuro effect. If you’re looking for something that is both glamorous and boldly edgy she could be your reference.
Midsommer- If you love flowers, braids, loose curls and all the boho vibes this is the movie for you. Yes, they take it to a maximum level and you could always shrink it down a bit but the vibes and creative juices are there.
Nope- Emerald “Em” Haywood has glowing skin that’s too good for any horror movie and subtle natural makeup that enhances her facial features just right. This would be a great reference for someone who wants skin that looks like skin and a glow from within. They want to look and feel like themselves, just elevated but still believable that this could be them without a MUA.
Sinners- If you’re looking for vintage waves the way they were originally designed then reference Mary. Her soft, effortless waves, above her shoulders allow for the delicate balance of both movement and shape. Even when the move gets INTENSE, her hair is still on point and if she can still look glam through all that you can easily pull it off for your wedding.
I’m sure there’s plenty others too but I’ll leave that research up to you. I do hope this opens your eyes to new options lurking in plain sight. Sometimes the best things come from surprising places. We can’t wait to see what you show our hair & makeup team for your wedding.
